The #1 Regret of Aspiring Entrepreneursโand How to Avoid It

Not long ago, I was chatting with a close friend who has always dreamed of starting her own business. She is full of original ideas, has the skills to bring them to life, and a deep desire for more freedom and flexibility in her life. But year after year, she kept putting it off—waiting for the "perfect time," doubting if she was truly ready and coming up with reasons for why it wasn’t the right time.
Fast forward a few years to our most recent chat and she confessed to me her biggest regret:
"I wish I had started sooner."
This hit me hard, because I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to doubt yourself, to wait for the right moment that never seems to come. But I also know how incredible it feels to take the leap, to finally turn your dreams into reality, and to build something that truly supports your life—on your terms.
If you’ve been dreaming of starting your own business but haven’t taken the first step yet, I want you to know: I know it’s not because you’re unmotivated or not capable enough.
This is one of the most common things I hear from my clients. And more often than not, there is a deeper issue holding them back. One they are often unaware of – something known as mindset blocks.
What’s Really Holding You Back?
Let me know if any of these sound familiar:
๐ซ Fear of failure – “What if I try and it doesn’t work?”
๐ซ Imposter syndrome – “Who am I to do this? Other people are more qualified and already successful. The market is already too crowded.”
๐ซ Overwhelm – “I don’t even know where to start.”
๐ซ Lack of time – “I’m already stretched so thin—how could I possibly add a business to the mix?”
๐ซ Money worries – “I can’t afford to take a financial risk right now.”
I get it. I’ve been there too. In fact, when I transitioned from a successful corporate career to running my own business, I had all these fears (and more) nagging at my heart and mind. The mindset shift I needed was also an identity shift.
My identity was largely tied up in the roles I played – mom, wife, and my job title were the top 3 that were always top of mind. Not just that, but overtime I realized that I measured my self-worth by how much money I earned instead of what really mattered to me: how connected I felt with my loved ones, how I inspired others to embrace their dreams, or how I challenged myself to push outside of my own comfort zone to see what was possible.
I longed for more flexibility and freedom in my day, to do work I loved while living my life in the way that worked best for me. I felt stuck, stagnant and unsure of how to create meaningful change in my life.
I also faced moments of doubt and uncertainty. The thing is—waiting won’t make these fears go away. In fact, the longer you wait, the more overwhelming they can become.
But what if there was a way to move past these fears and take that first step—today?
How to Overcome the Barriers and Finally Get Started
๐น Reframe Failure as Learning
What if failure wasn’t the end, but just a part of the journey? Every successful entrepreneur has faced failure. But what sets them apart is that they keep going, learn from their mistakes, and adjust. I made plenty of missteps when I first started my business, but each one taught me something invaluable. That’s how I built a successful business that works for my life—and not the other way around.
Actionable Tip:
Start by shifting your perspective on failure. Instead of seeing it as something to fear, view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. The first step is always the hardest, but the next one gets easier with every mistake you make. In no time you’ll be able to look back and be amazed at what you accomplished when you gave yourself the space to experiment.
๐น Embrace Imperfect Action
You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. In fact, perfect action doesn’t exist! What I learned is that clarity comes with action, not perfection. Whether it’s brainstorming your business ideas, setting up a simple website, or talking to a few potential clients—just start. You’ll be surprised how much momentum you can gain from taking consistent small steps toward your goal.
Actionable Tip:
Pick one small action to take today. It could be as simple as writing down your business idea or reaching out to someone who’s in your industry for advice. Action builds clarity—and confidence.
๐น Make Your Dream Life Non-Negotiable
I know life can get busy. As a mom, business owner, and wife, I get it. But here’s the truth: If you don’t intentionally carve out time for your dreams, life will always get in the way. The key to success is making your dream a priority. I did this by blocking off small, consistent chunks of time each week to work on my business, even when I was exhausted and it felt like I was stretched too thin. The things that matter most to you will always get done when you make them a priority. This is your permission to put off those dull chores and focus on what will really move the needle in your life – making your dream business your reality.
Actionable Tip:
Look at your schedule and block out specific times each week to work on your business. Even just an hour or two can make a huge difference over time.
