how to know you have a good business idea

Starting a business is one of the most exciting, life-changing decisions you can make. But how do you know if your idea has the potential to become a profitable and sustainable business? Before you dive in and start working on your business plan, take a moment to compare your idea against my list of 10 signs your business idea is set-up for success.

Keep reading to find out how many of these key factors you can check off your list.

  1. It Solves a Real Problem
Successful businesses are built on solving real problems. Whether it’s a pain point or a deeper emotional need, your business should address something your audience is actively looking to solve. Whether that’s more affordable, healthier food or a beautiful flower bouquet delivered to their doorstep – understanding what your ideal customer needs, wants and values on a deeper level is critical to success.
  2. You’re Passionate About It
Passion is the fuel that keeps you going, even when the road gets tough. I’ve been there—starting a business while juggling everything else in my life, including family and a moment or two for myself. My genuine passion for helping other women create businesses that transform their lives is what keeps me going when things get tough. Passion isn’t just enthusiasm—it’s what will inspire you to push through obstacles and fuels your success.
  3. There’s Market Demand
Before you commit to your idea, you need to ask yourself: Is there a market for it? Take the time to research trends, analyze your competitors, and understand your customers' needs. If people aren’t looking for what you’re offering, it may be difficult to build a sustainable business. One of the first things I did when transitioning from my corporate job was research my market to ensure there was enough demand for my services. You need to understand the market you want to play in before you jump in – trust me- it’s a game-changer.
  4. Your Target Audience is Clear
Do you know who your ideal customer is? Are you clear on what they need, where they hang out, and how to speak to them in a way that resonates? One of the first things you want to do when thinking through your business idea is to define your target audience so you can craft magnetic messaging that personally connects with your ideal customer. This is the key to building meaningful relationships that lead to loyal customers.
  5. You Have a Unique Value Proposition (UVP)
In a crowded marketplace, what makes your business stand out? A unique value proposition gives your ideal clients a reason to choose you over your competitors. Think about what makes your approach different—whether it’s your personal story, your service, or your customer experience. It’s critical to have a clearly defined UVP that you can consistently and clearly communicate to your ideal customer, employees, and anyone involved in your business.
  6. You Can Monetize It Easily
A great business idea needs a solid plan for making money. As you start shaping your business model, it’s important to make sure there’s a way to turn your idea into consistent and scalable revenue. Pricing strategy, sales funnels, and customer acquisition all play an important part in profitability. When I started my business, I was determined not to sacrifice my income for the sake of flexibility—I wanted both, and creating a solid revenue plan was key to achieving this goal.
  7. Your Business Model is Scalable
One of the biggest mistakes new business owners make is not thinking about growth early enough. Does your business model have room to grow without overwhelming you? Consider your time, resources, and capacity. What will be required of you and your business to serve your customers as your business grows?
  8. You’ve Received Positive Feedback
Have you gotten feedback from friends, potential customers, or industry experts that tells you your idea has value? If others see the potential in your business, it’s a great sign that you’re on the right track. For me, positive feedback from a few key mentors gave me the confidence to go all-in on my business. Just be sure to validate your idea with your target customers as well. Positive feedback is great, but what your customer thinks is what matters most.
  9. You Have (or Can Build) the Necessary Skills
Building a business requires a wide range of skills—marketing, sales, customer service, and more. While you don’t need to be an expert in everything you do need to understand the key areas of your business for long-term success.
  10. You’re Ready to Commit
Starting a business requires time, patience, and a willingness to learn and grow. If you’re ready to put in the work and stay consistent, you’re on the right path. When I made the decision to go all-in on my business, I had to commit—not just to the dream, but to the consistent effort it took to get there.
